What do you do when you get an
email from a friend you haven't seen in a few months asking you to take a
few days off from work to follow somebody that you've never met during a
500+ mile bike race a few hours from your house? Easy, send her an email and
say yes! So began John and Jenn's friendship. For the record, he thinks
endurance cyclists are crazy, yet he'll go for 25 mile training runs and
compete in 50 mile running races. But he was so inspired by Jenn's
performance in the ADK540 he actually decided to buy a road bike and start
putting in some miles himself (for the record, he still hasn't actually
bought the bike. He's still doing "research"). A self-proclaimed "Computer Geek", you can visit him at his MySpace or FaceBook pages. |

Here's a surprise--I met Jen in a bike shop. The rest is history. She played a major role in introducing me to a group of people with similar interests, including Donna, who is now my lovely wife. I mountain bike a lot--in the snow, in the dark, in the rain, in the sun, in the cold, in the hot--it's all joyous. Many 24-hour races ticked off (including one solo), many 12-hour races (including a couple solo), the Wilderness 101, lots of XC stuff. Oh yeah, and bunches of road centuries. In the last couple of years, I've ventured into adventure racing, both sprint and 12-hour races, and this year Donna and I are planning a few 50-mile MTB races and the Wild 100 as a co-ed team. Like any good little mountain biker, I do trail stuff, and I'm the course designer for Iron Cross, America's longest cyclocross race. It's all good. Following Jen around the southwest in June sounds like a great time and it'll be a nice break between race phases this season!

Ok, like, this is my "about me" thing paragraph. How did I become crazy? It all started when I met my friend Tom Berwager. Tom was a free spirit and raced RAAM in 1995. Tom reintroduced me to my bicycle and made me fall in love with it again. Why did I wear body paint and wings? The Victoria Secret wings Halloween costume was very sexy and fun and I had a really awesome chick to do it with. (Jenn!) The body paint at a mid winter beach party was painted on the top half of my body by the very cool guy I fell in love with and married and made me do something beyond my comfort level and by doing so, got Jen and a lot of other women to do the same and it was very cool. I guess you could say I like doing things so I can say, “yea, I really did that and it was fun!” I’m looking forward to our adventure across the West with my husband, Brett and co-conspirator, Jen and new acquaintance John.

When he's not busy kayaking the Amazon or hiking in Nepal. "Ski" manages to find time to ride his bike a bit. By a bit we mean that he's competed in RAAM a few times, he's won (and formally held the course record for) the ADK 544. Basically, if you can do it on a bike, he's done it. This includes keeping Jenn motivated and John awake during Jenn's record breaking performance in the Adirondacks.
